Taxi has gone through several stages of development and change until it reached its current form. Here, we review its history and the stages of its evolution:
The beginning was in Paris
In the 17th century in Paris, the concept of taxi as a means of public transportation was invented. However, it took the form of horse-drawn carriages known as "fiacres", which were used for transportation around the city. Later, the use of these carriages expanded to other cities in Europe and the United States of America.
"Taxicab", the first taxi company
In 1897, the first taxi company offering cab services using small cars was established when Herman Hollerith founded the "Taxicab" company in New York. Later, in 1907, he introduced a larger and more comfortable taxi for passengers, which he named "Taxicab".
London Taxi
In 1908, the history of the black taxi in London began. Its distinctive black color has an interesting story behind it. The economic conditions after World War II led drivers to choose black, which was the color available at the time, to avoid additional fees for choosing a different color. Over time, the London black taxi became more than just a means of transportation; it became an iconic symbol of the streets of London and a memorable experience for tourists.
Why Taxa?
With all this rich history and the stages of development that the taxi has gone through until today, when we look back at the origin of the name "taxi", we find that it is derived from the Latin word "taxa", which means the collection of fees or taxes in return for providing a specific service. The name "taxi" was then given to cars that provide transportation services, referring to the fare collected when using these cars as a means of transportation.
We adopted this name because it reflects the service we provide, and because it is an authentic, non-derived name that is easy to understand and widely recognized around the world.
