Responsibilities: The Police Officer will provide community‑oriented law enforcement services, patrols, crime prevention, and supportive outreach to students, faculty, staff, and visitors across the Homewood, East Baltimore, and Peabody campuses. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Representing JHPD’s vision, mission, and values in interactions with the university, community, and advocacy groups. Enforcing laws, rules, and regulations that protect individuals, property, and campus safety. Implementing community policing strategies, patrolling designated areas by vehicle, bicycle, and foot, and reporting safety hazards and violations. Maintaining a visible presence to serve as a positive resource and developing relationships with community stakeholders. Responding to calls for assistance, de‑escalating situations, and coordinating with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff. Conducting investigations of incidents, collecting evidence, and assisting with warrants and summonses. Providing safety information, conducting community‑related public safety programs, and assisting with traffic control and crowd management. Inspecting and maintaining equipment, operating law‑enforcement tools, and preparing cases for court, including testifying when required. Collaborating with local and state law‑enforcement agencies and performing general office duties such as answering telephones and maintaining visitor logs. Performing related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: High School Diploma or GED. Minimum age of 20½ years. Two years of service with a full‑service law‑enforcement agency at the time of application. Current MPCTC certification or certification within the last two (2) years, or satisfaction of Comparative Compliance standards. Comparative Compliance Standards (for Out‑of‑state Applicants): Minimum of 750 hours of acceptable entrance‑level police academy training. Current good standing with a full‑service law‑enforcement agency, or retired in good standing within two years of application. Submission of academy curriculum, total hours, and graduation certificate. Additional Requirements: U.S. citizenship or permanent legal residency, with supporting documentation. No felony convictions. Demonstrated physical ability to perform job duties. Willingness to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on‑call, and as needed. Valid driver’s license. Successful passage of written exam and oral interview. For previous police experience, no record of serious or repeated disciplinary actions. Salary and Incentives: Starting Salary: $70,000. Certification Incentive: $15,000 increase to base salary upon successful completion of MPTSC training, field training, and related requirements. City Residency Incentive: 20% increase for Baltimore city residents. Annual step increases. Work Environment: This position involves both indoor and outdoor duties, shift work, and occasional exposure to hazardous physical activities. A motor vehicle may be required, and the role may require appearing on emergency call‑in and staffing shortages.
