Town Planner

Position Summary for the Town Planner:
- The Town Planner performs professional and technical work in the field of urban and community planning. This position is responsible for reviewing development proposals, zoning applications, and planning documents to ensure consistency with local ordinances, comprehensive plans, and state regulations. The Town Planner assists in preparing and updating plans and policies, provides support to boards and commissions, and serves as a point of contact for the public on planning and zoning matters.
- Responds to citizen and customer inquiries, concerns, and complaints regarding planning, zoning, and development issues.
- Reviews plans, zoning, and permit applications for compliance with applicable ordinances, regulations, and comprehensive plans.
- Assists in the evaluation of rezoning requests, annexations, and amendments to zoning and land use ordinances.
- Reviews development proposals and site plans to ensure compliance with town codes, regulations, and adopted plans.
- Conducts research and compiles information on land use, demographics, zoning, and other planning-related topics.
- Develops, maintains, and updates supporting planning documents such as maps, drawings, reports, and GIS databases.
- Investigates potential violations of planning and zoning ordinances and assists in enforcement actions.
- Attends and participates in public meetings, hearings, and workshops; prepares reports and presentations for boards, commissions, and the public.
- Provides staff support to various planning initiatives and assists in long-range and current planning activities.
Qualifications Summary for the Town Planner:
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Administration, Geography, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- Prior experience in municipal or government planning.
- Knowledge of zoning code enforcement principles, land use laws, rules, and ordinances.
- Understanding of town and departmental policies, procedures, and operations.
- Proficiency with planning and mapping software, GIS applications, and other job-related computer programs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and public relations skills for effectively interacting with the public, developers, staff, and elected officials.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including the ability to prepare reports, correspondence, and public presentations.
- Ability to interpret and apply planning and zoning regulations with sound judgment and attention to detail.
