The Children's Guild School of Brooklyn is seeking a creative, experienced Music Teacher to join our team of seasoned educators. The Music Teacher will contribute to the emotional development of students by creating an enjoyable learning environment to inspire students' minds and help them grow in appreciation of music. The successful Music Teacher should be skilled in playing musical instruments, planning concerts for student participation and creating after school clubs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Curriculum & Instruction: Design and deliver music lessons using developmentally appropriate and modified materials to meet the unique needs of autistic students.
  • Adaptations: Implement strategies and techniques from ABA and other best practices to make music accessible, such as breaking down instructions, providing clear expectations, and using visual supports.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with parents, general education teachers, therapists, and other staff to create a cohesive support system and ensure students' goals are met.
  • Behavior Management: Manage challenging behaviors in a calm, consistent, and evidence-based manner, promoting self-regulation and student independence.
  • Assessment & Documentation: Evaluate student skills and track progress through observation and data collection, documenting progress towards IEP goals.
  • IEP Development: Contribute to the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and behavior management plans for music settings.
Essential Skills
  • Understanding of Autism: Specialized knowledge of autism spectrum disorder and its implications for learning, communication, and sensory processing.
  • Differentiated Instruction: The ability to adapt instruction, materials, and environment to suit individual student needs and learning styles.
  • Patience and Flexibility: A patient, person-centered approach to teaching that is adaptable and responsive to individual student needs.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with students, families, and the professional team.
  • Behavioral Strategies: Proficiency in evidence-based strategies for managing behavior and supporting students' social-emotional development.
  • Bachelor's degree in Music with teaching certification
  • Minimum of 3 credits of coursework in the area of special education
  • Prior experience working with children or individuals with autism and other developmental disabilities is highly preferred.
  • A strong understanding of adaptive music teaching methods, sensory processing needs, and effective behavior management techniques is essential.
